Several historic buildings house government offices in the Casco Antiguo. The first example is the Presidency of the Republic, which is located where the customs building was originally found. Called the Palacio de las Garzas has undergone major transformations over the years and its present structure corresponds to the restorations made in the early last century by President Belisario Porras.
Center of cultural activities in the country, another major landmark is the National Theater of Panama which occupies the same building of the Palace of Government and Justice, now the Ministry of Government and Justice. We also see the City Hall building dating from 1910.
On one side of the church of St. Francis of Assisi is the Palacio Bolivar, home to the room that held the Amphictyonic Congress in 1824. Over time and after it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt, it has had different functions, as was a convent, school, military barracks and headquarters of public offices.
In the Casco Antiguo you can also find the Panama Canal Museum, the National Institute of Culture, theater Villalaz Anita and the Embassy of France, among other attractions.
